Dr. Owen Helmkay provides psychological services to children, adolescents, adults, and families. He offers individual therapy to children, youth, and adults who are experiencing a range of difficulties such as
Dr. Helmkay maintains a particular interest in working with clients suffering from ADHD, anxiety, and bereavement. Dr. Helmkay also provides psycho-educational and psycho-diagnostic assessments to children, adolescents, and adults in order to evaluate learning challenges and disabilities, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), developmental disorders (including ASD), as well as gifted identification.
Dr. Helmkay works collaboratively with adults, children, youth and their families in providing a warm, empathic environment in which to address presenting concerns.
Therapeutic Approaches
Dr. Helmkay’s therapeutic orientation may best be described as cognitive-behavioural (CBT) within a humanistic-existential framework – thus helping his clients to develop a greater understanding of themselves and fostering the development of coping skills and strategies that can be implemented into their everyday lives.
Professional Biography
Dr. Helmkay received his B.A. (Honours) in Psychology from Brock University in St. Catharines, his Masters Degree in Experimental (Cognitive) Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ottawa. Dr. Helmkay has trained and worked in various community clinics, hospitals, and Boards of Education in Ottawa and Windsor including: the Centre for Psychological Services at the University of Ottawa, the former Carleton Board of Education, Windsor Regional Hospital (including the Windsor Regional Children’s Centre and the Windsor Community Mental Health Clinic), and for 10 years he was employed as a Psychologist and Consultant to the Gifted Programs at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. He has also maintained an active private psychology practice since 2004.
Dr. Helmkay is a registered psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario and the Canadian Register of Health Service Psychologists. In support of the profession, he maintains memberships in international, national, provincial, and local psychological associations. He keeps up to date on current developments in the field by regularly attending psychology conferences, attending and providing educational workshops, and attending professional meetings and lectures.

Therapeutic Approach
Erin’s approach to therapy is integrative based on her training in a variety of treatment modalities, including emotion-focused and cognitive behavioural. She also considers the impact of early family and social relationships and their influence on present issues. She appreciates that the client is the expert of his or her own felt experience. A collaborative approach will be utilized in order to set therapeutic goals that address specific needs. Erin always strives to build a safe and trusting working relationship in an understanding, accepting, comforting, and respectful environment.
Professional Biography
Erin received her Bachelor of Arts (B.A. Honours) with specialization in Psychology and her Masters of Arts (M.A.) in Applied Psychology from Laurentian University. She conducted research on the association between the home environment and early literacy skills. Erin has also presented at several conferences. Since graduating, Erin has been providing psychotherapeutic services in a variety of clinical settings, including a community mental health clinic and private practice. She has also facilitated several workshops (e.g., parenting, stress and anxiety). Erin recently completed her registration as a Psychological Associate with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. She proceeds to further her professional development by attending workshops in order to provide knowledge and skills that accurately reflect current established theory and research findings.
